Forum and server performance problems resolved
2005-02-12
RuneHQ News

Ok, the forum is finally up and running again. Zipservers, our server provider found some issues with settings and tweaked some configurations to help out performance.

This has seemed to help as far as we can tell.

Not sure how the forum got hosed up, but it is again working. I am still trying to find out what cause the permission errors this time, let's hope this will finally be resolved.

7th February 2005 - Roving Elves

Today we have released a new quest which expands the story started in the Waterfall quest.

A fellowship of elves has recently started travelling in the elven woods of Isafdar. The beautiful Eluned is happy to help anyone, but her companion, Islwyn, is not quite so friendly.

To help him overcome his dislike of humans you must set right the wrongs committed against his family in the Roving Elves Quest.

Fenkenstrain, Agility, Slayer, and Prayer book changes

RuneHQ News

Update 2/1/05: The new Slayer Skill Guide has been uploaded on RuneHQ!

____________________________________

The following is a direct quotation from Runescape.com

31st January 2005 - Creature of Fenkenstrain

Creature of Fenkenstrain

Dr Fenkenstrain, master and sole occupant of the castle to the northeast of Canifis, needs a new servant to go on a dark errand for him. Do you have the stomach to help Fenkenstrain and his twisted purpose?

Agility area

A werewolf agility area has opened beneath the Haunted Woods of Morytania. There is a level 60 obstacle course and a level 25 skullball course. Beware, though - the agility area is for werewolves only.

Slayer changes

People have told us they don't like how in multicombat areas they could do most of the damage to a creature and then someone would deal the killing blow and be counted as the slayer of the creature.

We have changed this. Now both the person who dealt the killing blow and the person who did the most damage will be counted as the slayer for the purposes of their kill counts. (If you did both these things you will only count as having killed the creature once though.) The slayer xp will be split evenly between the two players.

Giants have been renamed to hill giants. This is to make it clear that when the slayer masters tell you to kill hill giants, they don't mean moss giants, fire giants or ice giants.

We have added more hill giants and hellhounds to cope with the increased demand for these creatures that has been created by the slayer skill. There are now more hellhounds in the Taverley dungeon and some south of the Wilderness axe hut. There are hill giants added to the north of the observatory and south-west of the gnome stronghold.

People may have noticed last week we also decreased the totals of bronze dragons and steel dragons being assigned to decrease crowding on those creatures.

Prayer books

You can now check your prayer books to see which pages you have added. Just right click on them and choose the "check" option".

The following is a direct quotation from Runescape.com

23rd January 2005 - New Seattle worlds online

I've just put another 6 new worlds online! This time located in Seattle. This should give lots more space for you to use.
We've had a bit of a run of bad luck over the past couple of days with our servers, and I apologise for these temporary problems (now fixed at least) with our Dallas servers, and the outage of our AboveNet servers, which was caused by a powercut.

Obviously making sure there are plenty of worlds for you to use is a top priority. The occasional glitch is unavoidable, so instead our strategy is to have enough worlds that there is plenty of redundancy. That way even if some need fixing it doesn't matter so much, as there is still lots you can use elsewhere.

Hopefully these new Seattle worlds will help ensure there is sufficient redundancy. Also you'll be pleased to hear that there are another 11 world servers currently on order to help ensure this remains the case.

Thanks
Andrew

26th January 2005 - Slayer Skill

The Slayer Skill

Today we have introduced a new skill for members called the Slayer skill!

The Slayer skill allows you to kill strange new creatures which would previously have been immune to your attacks. These previously undisturbed creatures have been hoarding treasure for a long time, and as such you may find great rewards from killing them...

To start the Slayer skill, you should find one of the Slayer Masters who are located in various places around RuneScape. There are five Slayer Masters in total, each catering to different strengths.

They can be found in Burthorpe, Morytania, Edgeville Dungeon, Zanaris, and Shilo Village.

The Slayer Master will assign you a mission to kill a certain number of a specific type of monster. Some of those monsters will be ordinary monsters, some of them will be the new Slayer skill monsters.

By killing the assigned monsters, you will gain Slayer experience. Each Slayer Master has a different selection of enemies they will assign from, each being tailored to suit different levels of players.

You may have a different Slayer Master suggested to you as more suitable for your level, but you can ignore that advice if you have a particular choice of Slayer Master to take assignments from.

Once you have completed your assignment, you can get another by returning to a Slayer Master. Some monsters will require specific weapons to kill them, (or equipment to protect you against them!) all of which can be purchased from the various Slayer Masters.

Slayer levels and equipment required to kill the new monsters can be found in your in-game skill guide by clicking on the slayer skill icon, and also on the manual page.

We have also added two new dungeons where the Slayer skill monsters can be found. One of them is the mysterious tower north west of Canifis that many people have been wondering about. The other can be found underground to the east of the Fremennik Province.

Be careful if you don't have the slayer level to fight these monsters - they are very dangerous.

We have also added greater numbers of certain monsters around the world, to cope with the increased demands created on these creatures by the Slayer Masters.

Finally if you get given a target monster that seems a bit hard to do, then perhaps you aren't thinking about it carefully enough. For many of the given tasks there is actually more than one possible target. So try to think what other creatures in the game would also qualify as meeting the requirement. For instance if you're told to slay Blue Dragons and you think that's impossible then think about it for a moment instead, perhaps there is a weaker type of Blue dragon you can slay instead... (i.e Baby Blue dragons). This is true for quite a few of the targets.

In other news, the Magic Guild in Yanille has recently received a shipment of new Mystic Robes!

Like most robes, they offer no resistence to physical attacks, but will enhance the magical abilities of their wearer.

26th January 2005 - Californian Worlds Renamed

We've just renamed our United-Layer, Peer1, AboveNet, and Nlayer worlds to indicate where in the US they are located.
Since these worlds are all in the same state, they were originally named by which Internet backbone they are on, which can make quite a big difference too.

However since then RuneScape has grown quite a bit, and we now have worlds all over the US! So it seems more sensible to just name all the worlds by their location, especially since lots of players have been asking why we don't have worlds in California.

Nothing has actually changed :) The performance and the way these worlds work is exactly the same as before. They are just named differently.

Thanks
Andrew

Server and Site Performance issues, Site Updates
2005-01-19
RuneHQ News

First off, sorry about all the site and forum problems we have experienced in the last couple of months or so.

We purchased a cheaper server in an effort to cut costs when we switched to the new Invision Forum.
Upon switching to IPB instead of phpBB for our forum, we thought the load would be less and that we could get away with a less powerful server.

This turned out not to be the case.
We also had issues because a problem with the version of MySQL that was used on the old server not being fully compatible with IPB 2.0.

We have purchased a new more powerful server again and have moved the site back over to it.
Upon the move the other day we had a log file that was full and we didn't realize it.
This log file was causing major server performance issuses and has now been cleaned up.
we are hopeful that the forum problems have been finally resolved.

We have made updates to the site links for Monsters, Persons, Items, Skill Guides, Quest Guides, Maps, Special Reports and other things on the site in the last few months. We have been getting lots of emails stating people could not get to certain pages on the site. 90% of the time this is because they are trying to get to the old links that are no longer valid. PLEASE update your browser cache and your favorites if you are having issues getting to site pages. If your address on you browser ends in .php, then you probably have the wrong link and need to update your browser cache.

There are still lots of guides that need links updated. We appreciate people letting us know when you find these broken links. We are working on getting these updated but we have tons of work still to do and lots of updates needed.

Karamja Dungeon and Castle Wars Changes
2005-01-19
RuneHQ News

When you visit the new Karamja Dungeon (located southwest of Brimhaven: see maps created by Xtotre and tenseiken here), be sure to bring a hatchet. The new Dragon platelegs, dropped by Steel dragons, Iron dragons, and Bronze dragons, can be seen here.

Quotations taken directly from Runescape.com, 17th January 2005

Karamja Dungeon

We have added a new dungeon under Karamja. It is packed with heaps of new combat training areas, including moss giants, fire giants, greater demons, black demons and red dragons, as well as a number of new enemies to pit yourself against.

To venture deeper into the dungeon there are some small woodcutting and agility level requirements. Head west from Brimhaven and speak to Saniboch. He will charge you 875 coins to gain entrance to the dungeon.

Castle Wars changes

People have been reporting that when a high level player manages to get his own team's flag, they can then sit next to their bandage table and heal constantly while being defended by their own team, thus making them impossible to kill.

We have therefore made it so that if you are holding your own team's flag while you are in the boundary of your own castle, it immediately returns to its start point.

People have also reported players taking flags and then deliberately not scoring with them, often calling themselves "spies" for the other team.

To prevent this, we have made a new right click option on players while they are in castle wars called "steal flag". If someone has captured the enemies' flag for more than three minutes, their team mates can use this option to take the flag from that player and score with it themselves.

RuneHQ server problems
2005-01-13
RuneHQ News

We regret the recent unavailability of the website and forums. We had purchased a new server in hopes of eliminating the SQL errors and lag problems, but the new server caused far more problems. We are now trying to get this resolved. Please be patient and hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

MrStormy is hard at work getting things rehosted - this message is in lieu of a message from him just to let y'all know what is going on.

RuneHQ hosting has now been moved!
2005-01-13
RuneHQ News

The site has now been moved to a new server. We are hopeful this new server will alleviate the problems of the last few weeks. We still have some updates to make to ensure this server performs well. We will try to ensure these updates are done when it will affect the least amount of people.

Thanks for your patience.

In Search Of The Myreque and Trawler Game Update
2005-01-11
RuneHQ News

Quotations taken directly from Runescape.com, 10th January 2005

In Search Of The Myreque

Canifis is experiencing an upsurge in new faces, and a stranger has appeared with a job to track down some local heros known only as "The Myreque".

The Myreque are fighting a desperate battle against the darkness of Morytania. Will you go In Search of the Myreque?

Trawler Game Update

In todays update, Murphy's trawler mini-game has been improved. Nope, he hasn't fixed the leaks but there is a new status bar whilst you are on board the boat.

The status bar lets you know how much water is in the boat, so you know if it is about to sink, and it also keeps track of the time left, how many fish have been caught and the state of the net.

You can find Murphy's trawler moored at Port Khazard, and if you help him keep it afloat he will give you a share of the catch!

Atlanta Server Problems
2005-01-07
RuneHQ News

Quote from Runescape.com:

"Our Atlanta servers seem to be suffering from a very unreliable internet connection today.

Their internet link seem to be periodically going offline for a few seconds, before recovering again shortly later.

I am contacting the hosting company which provides bandwidth for these servers, and will stress to them the urgency of them fixing this problem as soon as possible.

Meanwhile I recommend if you are having trouble using the Atlanta servers you just use some of our other servers in a different location

Thanks for your patience."
