Cook-X
2005-09-12
RuneHQ News

Quotations taken directly from Runescape.com

12th September 2005 - Cook-X

The long-awaited Cook-X option is finally available! Whenever you cook food on a range or fire, you will now see a little menu at the bottom of your window showing a picture of the item. Left-click on it to cook only one, or right-click if you'd like to cook several of them. (The menu won't appear if you've only got one of the raw item.)

This has given us the chance to make a few much-needed tweaks to the cooking skill. As you may have noticed, certain types of food were mostly unused because the reward from making them didn't match the time and trouble it took. We've addressed this by giving more xp for successfully cooking certain foods (curry, snailmeat and chompymeat) and increasing the healing effect of pies, pizza, stew and bread - see the manual page on our website for the updated details. We've also improved the availability of certain ingredients and utensils needed to make the more complex recipies.

Despite concerns from players that we would reduce the xp rewards from cooking fish, we have only done this in two cases: karambwanji and lava eels. The rate at which karambwanji can be fished has been increased significantly - which should help players catch the elusive karambwan octopus once they've done the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest - so we've dropped the cooking xp for karambwanji to compensate for this. Lava eels had become extremely easy to catch following the introduction of the agility shortcuts in the Taverley Dungeon, so the cooking xp for those has had to be reduced in the interests of Balance. The time taken to cook an inventory-full of items has not been significantly altered.

On a similar theme, players filling containers with water may be pleased to find that once they've filled one container, all other containers of that sort in their inventory will automatically start to fill themselves without any more clicking. You can stop this by walking away from the water source.

6th September 2005 - New shortcuts and prayers

Agility Shortcuts

Today's update features a huge expansion to the benefits gained from advancing the agility skill.

Those Gnomish adventurers have been at it again! Zipping around RuneScape with one eye open for a quick bit of treasure and the other looking for a quick exit should they need one (and they usually do).

Of course, for such small folk, a trip around RuneScape might seem a daunting proposal, especially with such short legs! But that's where the dexterous little folk come into their own. With all their comings and goings, they've developed a selection of shortcuts, which help them to get around a lot quicker. So, unlike the Humans who have to do all that tedious walking, Gnomes simply hop, skip and jump their way around the world.

But then of course, there are those few exceptional adventurers of the Human persuasion who may find a shortcut quite useful! Why should the Gnomes have it so easy and why shouldn't an enterprising Human (or two) be able to use the very same shortcuts as Gnomes?

Simple really, Gnomes are 'dexterous devils', 'agility aces' and 'sprightly savants'! They use their agility in order to climb up mountain rocks, dodge through narrow crevices, crawl through low tunnels. Things that the humble Human adventurer can only aspire to.

This update adds 30 new shortcuts to the game world, allowing players to quickly gain access to well known and popular areas. The in-game skill guide has also been updated to reflect the special areas only accessible with specific agility levels.

  • Quick shortcut into the level 20 Wilderness from Trollheim (but not back again!) for those brave enough!

  • Two new Taverley Dungeon shortcuts to quickly access deeper parts of the dungeon from the entrance area.

  • Three shortcuts for the Elven overpass area.

  • Four shortcuts for Trollheim allowing quicker access into the Troll Stronghold from the teleport point.

  • Two Falador shortcuts: the one to the east is now two-way, and a new one to the south.

  • Three shortcuts for Lumbridge allowing fast access to the swamps, quicker access to Varrock, and a stepping stone shortcut to the Champions' Guild across the River Lum.

  • A shortcut to Morytania allowing you to avoid the intricate tomb walkways, though you will still need to complete the Priest in Peril quest to access Morytania initially.

  • Two spiky chains allowing quick access to higher levels in the Slayer Tower!

  • Log balance near the Sinclair Mansion allowing quicker access to the Fremennik province and the Slayer Dungeon.

  • Two Slayer Dungeon shortcuts allowing quicker access to the vicious monster of your choosing.

  • One quick access in Port Phasmatys to the ectopool!

  • ... and a handful of extras which we'll let you discover for yourself!

New Prayers

Today's update also sees the release of three new prayers for members:

  • Retribution - if this prayer is active when you die, it deals damage for up to 25% of your max-prayer to all nearby enemies. Note that this prayer won't hurt other players outside of PvP areas, and it won't hit multiple targets in non-multiway combat zones.

  • Redemption - if this prayer is active when your health drops below 10% (if you don't immediately die), you will be healed for 25% of your max-prayer.

  • Smite - if this prayer is active when you are fighting another player, they will lose 1 prayer point for every 4 damage you do to them. This prayer drain effect isn't affected by your victim's protection prayers.

None of the above prayers can be used at the same time as each other or the protection prayers.

5th September 2005 - Behind the scenes - September

Firstly, we are expanding the prayers available in the game. These prayers are primarily intended for wilderness use and should add a new dimension to how you choose to use your precious prayer points. Obviously, this will mean you will see a few new head icons in the game so be prepared to see something new hovering over your latest wildy opponent.

It was 27th August 2002 when we released the first part of the West Ardougne campaign (plague city). The storyline has moved from strength to strength over the last 3 years, and finally (if we are lucky) we might just understand the true reason for the occupation of West Ardougne, with the release of the appropriately named "Mournings end part 2". A quest which also introduces one of the toughest puzzles ever introduced to RuneScape and brings forth another addition to an existing skill - one which we know you have been eagerly awaiting.

Later this month we will also be publishing the first of our new look letters pages. We have received some amazing questions so far, ranging from questions to the KBD (The far left head seems especially popular) to questions for the new milking cow. As previously mentioned, some of the best questions will be added to the game.

Also this month we will be adding the long awaited "cook-x". This will mean you can cook your entire inventory at once, in the same way as "smith-x" or "fletch-x" work. This change will also be accompanied by some cooking rebalances; no food will be made less effective than before, but some food types (particularly the more complicated ones) will receive an XP and HP boost to make them more worth producing.

This month we have also been looking at various ways to speed up moving around the world map the main concept being turned into an agility update. This update will allow you to use your agility to get around the map quicker by using a series of agility shortcuts.

Bob the cat has also had a makeover this month. Unferth (his pet human) has been very distressed as Bob has been behaving odder than normal and wandering further and further away from home. What's up with Bob? Has his heart finally got the better of him? Why is the wise old man leaving bowls of milk out for him? Why hasnt he been sold for death runes yet? Why has he been hanging around the shantay pass?

We will also be updating some of the older sections of the map graphically as we have already done with Lumbridge. This time we will be updating what we lovingly call "Thurgos Penninsula" (thats the point of land under Port Sarim where the dwarf lives) and its surroundings, so make sure you take a trip down there later in the month, to see some of the work that has gone on down there.

Garden Of Tranquillity
2005-08-31
RuneHQ News

Quotations taken directly from Runescape.com

30th August 2005 - Garden Of Tranquillity

This is a copy of a message that has recently been circulating around the inns of Varrock:
"Queen of Varrock seeks experienced gardener to help construct a garden of peace and serenity as surprise for husband. Only serious Farmers need apply. Peasants welcome (although not that welcome). Tools not supplied. Please note: under no circumstances are the contents of this message to be disclosed to Rollie um, one means King Roald."

Speak to Queen Ellamaria in the eastern grounds of Varrock palace to discuss her plans for a Garden of Tranquillity, and put your newly-trained Farming skills to the test.

Other Changes

Players who have completed the Family Crest quest will now be able to change their reward gauntlets. Just speak to Johnathon in the Jolly Boar Inn, Caleb in Catherby or Avan in Al Kharid if you would like them to re-enchant your gauntlets for you. They will, unfortunately, charge you for this service.

Kolodion the mage has decided that adventurers may henceforth wear whatever armour and weapons they like within his Mage Arena. However, he would like to remind you he only permits magical combat in the Arena, not melee or ranged attacks.
